Part design: from sketch to prototype

By · Updated on · 2 min read

Designing a part means turning an idea, a sketch or a broken part into a 3D model and dimensioned drawings that a manufacturer can produce. Manufacturing is then managed with our partners.

Key points

  • A sketch, a dimensioned photo or an existing part is enough to get started.
  • The manufacturing file pack (3D model, dimensioned drawings, bill of materials) can be used by any manufacturer.
  • The process depends mostly on quantity, material and the precision required.

The steps, from idea to part

  • Feasibility: what is possible, and how
  • 3D design
  • Drawings with every dimension
  • Prototype, made by our partners
  • Small batch, if needed

3D printing or machining?

3D printing suits prototypes, small quantities and complex shapes well. Machining suits parts that need high precision, metals and batches. The choice is made case by case.

First opinion

Answer the four questions to see the most suitable process.

What the manufacturing file pack contains

  • The 3D model, in STEP format
  • Dimensioned drawings, with tolerances
  • The bill of parts and materials
  • Manufacturing recommendations

And the electronics

When the product includes electronics, we also design the board, consistent with the enclosure and the mechanical parts.
